Many people think that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables will prevent them from getting cancer. However, a recent review of research indicates that there may be less association than previously suspected. The investigator who reviewed the research indicated that it might be difficult to really evaluate this relationship because of other factors that may play a role, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, the environment, the amount of time during which the person has ingested a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and other dietary factors.
Why you should eat fruits and vegetables:
* One study found that smokers who consumed a variety of vegetables lowered their risk of lung cancer. “Different fruits and vegetables contain different bioactive compounds known as phytochemicals. Several of the plant pigments such as red (lycopene) in tomatoes, may confer health benefits that differ from the blue (anthocyanins) in red cabbage. “
* Other research showed that a higher intake of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage) may reduce the risk of breast cancer.
* An aging research shows that people who reach older ages are those who eat more vegetables. In the Japanese island of Okinawa has an unusually high number of centenarians. But how do you keep diseases such as cancer at bay?, Researchers believe that the key can be found in your diet that is full of green leafy vegetables.
* The researchers reviewed numerous studies on the grenade for the prevention or treatment of cancer. “The results were overwhelming in favor of the pomegranate, in the form of juice, extract or seed oil. Studies suggest that pomegranate potentially serves to reduce the initiation and development of breast cancer, prostate, lung and colon. While the increased consumption of fruits and vegetables can give you no definitive protection against cancer, this does not give permission to cross them off your shopping list. They are full of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients that benefit our health and a high intake has been associated with reduced blood pressure.
Be sure to include a variety of them in your diet and consume at least five servings per day as recommended by the USDA. One serving of fruit equals ½ cup or a small piece of whole fruit. A serving of vegetables equals ½ cup raw or cooked vegetables or 1 cup raw leafy greens.
Fruits and vegetables can not be a magic pill for cancer prevention, but they are definitely very important in a healthy diet.
